UNRWA partners with Muslim Charity to provide psycho-social support and help to families following war in Gaza

Tuesday, 2nd December 2014

Muslim Charity Helping The Needy and The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have signed an agreement to provide psycho-social support to the war affected families and also much needed support to homeless people in the Gaza Strip. The USD 300,000 grant will help UNRWA to provide psycho-social support and shelter thousands of people amongst the 80,000 homeless families. Muslim Charity has worked with UNRWA to provide Non-Food item kits to 1,500 families when the recent war broke out in the Gaza Strip.

The Partnership Agreement was formally signed at a ceremony held in London. On this occasion, Muslim Charity also launched the “Help Gaza” campaign to strengthen its rebuilding efforts in Gaza. Gaza lies in ruins and tragedy, the civilian population has borne the brunt of the escalating violence. The current crisis is the worst Gaza has seen in decades, more than 100,000 people have had their homes destroyed. Hospitals, schools, shops and factories have all been badly damaged, and thousands have lost everything they owned. The Help Gaza campaign is multifaceted and aims at raising much needed funds for rebuilding lives of people in Gaza through providing support for renovation and repair of houses, psycho-social support, education and health services. The campaign also aims at helping families in their efforts to become self-reliant through providing income generation skills.

Muslim Charity’s Vice Chairman, Mr Bakhtyar Pirzada, commented, “Through continuing generous donations from benefactors and partners, we will make all the efforts to help in saving and rebuilding lives in Gaza. It is our aim to demonstrate our solidarity with the people of Gaza through UNRWA helping them to rebuild their homes. I am sure people in the United Kingdom will continue to generously donate towards helping families to repair or rebuild their homes in Gaza.”

“We are very grateful for the generous and timely donations received from Muslim Charity in support of UNRWA operation in Gaza” said Mr Lionello Boscardi from UNRWA, who added that “the emergency is not over yet, only this week extreme weather and flooding have forced hundreds of families in Gaza to evacuate their homes”.

The Regional Youth Ambassador of UNRWA was also present during the ceremony and spoke of the positive contributions being played by UNRWA for the people of Gaza.

The ceremony was held at the P21 Gallery in Central London and was attended by the volunteers, donors, partners and other stakeholders of Muslim Charity and its partner organisations.
