Muslim Charity Haiti Response – making a real difference to people’s lives
On Tuesday 12 January 2010, Haiti was struck with a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake which struck at 16:53 local time. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) – which immediately notified Muslim Charity as well as other leading International NGOs and Broadcasting Corporations – further recorded six aftershocks in the two hours after the main earthquake.
This huge tragedy has caused immense damage to the country’s infrastructure and has taken many lives. On 28 January the Haitian government gave a confirmed death toll of 170,000. Haitian authorities have also estimated that 250,000 people sustained injuries, and as many as one million Haitians were left homeless.
Muslim Charity immediately launched an Emergency Appeal for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake. Muslim Charity has partnered with ShelterBox and is currently on the ground providing urgently needed food, medicine, water purification units and shelter.
Muslim Charity’s Emergency Shelter Boxes were prepared in Cornwall (UK) and immediately sent to the Hiatian capital, Port-au-Prince, to provide support and assistance to those terribly effected by this tragic disaster.
With a donation of £500 you can donate towards a complete Shelter Box that can support 10 people.

The £500 Shelter Box provides the following:
- At the heart of every ShelterBox is a ten-person tent. It is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds and heavy rainfall. Internally, each tent has privacy partitions that allow recipients to divide the space as they see fit.
- Every box contains a children’s pack containing drawing books, crayons and pens.
- The boxes contain a range of other survival equipment including thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, essential in areas where temperatures plummet at nightfall.
- The box itself is lightweight and waterproof and has been used for a variety of purposes in the past - from water and food storage containers to a cot for a newly born baby.
- A key piece in every box is either a wood burning or multi-fuel stove - that can burn anything from diesel to old paint. This provides the heart of the new home where water is boiled, food is cooked and families congregate. In addition, there are pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage containers.
